What is a Breakthrough?
Breakthrough in the dictionary may be defined as
1. A sudden, dramatic, and important discovery or development, esp. In science.
2. A significant and dramatic overcoming of a perceived obstacle allowing the completion of a process.
3. The overcoming of a stalemate.
4. A military movement or advance all the way through and beyond an enemy’s frontline defense.
5. An abrupt solution.
In the Bible, a breakthrough is usually used in the sense of breaking through a defense, whether good or evil in origin, i.e. breaking through to the king, breaking through as a thief.
The greatest breakthrough is being born again, John 3. Charles Spurgeon said, Christian religion is of no avail whatever, unless there be something more added to it—the being “born again,” is a matter so mysterious, that human words cannot describe it. It is not an operation which a man performs for himself: a new principle is infused, which works in the heart, renews the soul, and affects the entire man.
It is not a change of my name, but a renewal of my nature, so that I am not the man I used to be, but a new man in Christ Jesus. To wash and dress a corpse is a far different thing from making it alive: man can do the one, God alone can do the other. If you have then, been “born again,” your acknowledgment will be, “O Lord Jesus, the everlasting Father, Thou art my spiritual Parent; unless Thy Spirit had breathed into me the breath of a new, holy, and spiritual life, I had been to this day ‘dead in trespasses and sins.’ My heavenly life is wholly derived from Thee, to Thee I ascribe it. ‘My life is hid with Christ in God.’ It is no longer I who live, but Christ who liveth in me.” May the Lord enable us to be well assured on this vital point, for to be unregenerate is to be unsaved, unpardoned, without God, and without hope."
Your breakthrough is defined by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. That breaking out of the walls of an ordinary and very dead life is the basis of breakthrough. It is something God does. Our part is to believe. That's why getting into God's Word is so vital. It is the source of faith.
Jesus said, "If you can believe, all things are possible." To have a breakthrough will come through faith. It will come as we learn to establish the kind of 'soil' that the seed of God's promises can be planted in. Faith will come and we will be able to believe when we nurture our hearts properly.
Breakthrough will bring praise up out of our hearts when it comes. Ps. 34:1 This will be because God's Word will release His power in us. This chapter tells of three things that God will deliver us from, and it tells of three conditions that will assure breakthrough. (See the next section.)
Some say that the 34th Psalm was written as David's Spirit led reaction to his being chased in the wilderness by Saul. The Bible shows us that breakthrough is preceded by battles that at times are very intense and fearful. You should know this - when an army gets near the fortress of its enemy and is about to break through its final defenses, that is when the fight is the most intense. One of the signs of a breakthrough is the fear, frustration, confusion, and emotional free fall that comes before a great victory. Understand that some of those around you won't stay by your side because they aren't ready for the final push. Don't worry about them. God will use you to bless them one day. As for you - don't give up! If you're constantly running into the devil, it's probably because you and he are no longer going in the same direction!
Breakthrough is going to see you prepare and then receive a significant and dramatic victory over an obstacle in your life. You will glorify God by experiencing His deliverance. You will be able to live out your God intended purpose by the power of the Holy Spirit. Finally, you will have an experience and encounter with God that you can pass on to others. You will be a personal witness of God's glory in your life. Ps. 34:3 will come from your life as you engage in the faith works of your ministry: "Oh magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His Name together." God will use you to draw together and build His Church!
